Organisation Outline:
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz - BfS) started work in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt in November 1989. With a staff of 
around 650,it is responsible for enforcement tasks under the Nuclear Energy Act and the Radiological Protection Precautions Act, and performs functions
in the fields of nuclear safety, transportation ofradioactive substances, management and disposal of radioactive waste, and radiological protection.
The BfS assists the Federal Environment Ministry in the exercise of the latter's federal supervisorypowers. In order to perform its functions, the Agency
conducts scientific research.
